Our team and many of our clients use SEMrush as their online digital marketing management platform because it provides more than 50+ tools to use for SEO, content marketing, competitor research, PPC and social media marketing all from one platform.
And compared to other platforms, you pay less and get so much more! More data, features, effective marketing across all channels, etc.
Compared to other competitors in the market, such as SimilarWeb, Semrush lets your marketing team do all their important tasks from one place and gives actionable recommendations that help you optimize your website, content, and marketing campaigns more effectively and efficiently.
Its competitor, SimilarWeb, is not a marketing platform—but is a web analytics vendor that provides analytical insights about website traffic. It does not give advanced SEO tools, content marketing, or social media tools.
Today, we want to discuss the difference between SEMrush and SimilarWeb so you can see for yourself the benefits SEMrush offers over its competitor SimilarWeb…
Why we use SEMrush at PSC
One reason our team chose SEMrush was because of the amount and quality of tools they offered. We specifically liked the keyword research, on page SEO help and blog content grader, and the fact that they’ve included social media posting and tracking tools and an integrated listing management service into their platform. We also use the WordPress plugin for our website and many of our clients.
It truly is a reliable one stop shop for almost all marketing needs!
Although we are biased, we want to do our best to give you the information you need to decide for yourself if SEMrush is the best platform for you. So, let’s check out some basic differences…
The main difference
The main difference between the two is that SEMrush offers a comprehensive Traffic Analytics suite for online visibility, SEO, PPC and social media. SimilarWeb is focused only on website statistics.
The in-depth SEO features you get with SEMrush will accelerate you beyond your competitors by providing you with semantic keyword grouping, rank tracking, backlink analysis, on-page SEO and more!
SimilarWeb offers only basic SEO features centered around website traffic analytics. There is little in-depth keyword research tools, rank tracking or backlink database.
SEMrush vs. SimilarWeb
In this section we want to break down the crucial differences between the two when it comes to the competitive analysis tool, keyword analysis and social media analysis.
Competitive Analysis Tool
SimilarWeb is leveraged as a web measurement and competitive intelligence tool that will allow you to keep a close eye on your overall business growth online. They assess you based on other sites online too.
However, SEMrush facilitates traffic analysis from several marketing channels and through its auditing tools, allows you to identify SEO weaknesses. It points to exactly what you need to improve upon to move up in search engine rankings.
It also helps give you the advantage over your competitor’s websites by giving you insights into their digital marketing campaigns.
Keyword analysis
SEMrush and SimilarWeb both provide valuable information on paid and organic keywords and help users identify the best keywords to use online and in campaigns.
However, SEMrush provides high-quality data on consumer behavior from real anonymous users including from public data, partnerships and real Google SERP results. It provides access to 20 billion keywords from 142 databases from different countries, as well as a backlink database with over 40 trillion backlinks.
SimilarWeb offers similar data accuracy for large and medium-size websites, but less accurate or even no data for websites with less than 50k visits per month. The size of the keyword database is unknown and there is no backlink database.
Social media analysis
When it comes to social media analysis, SEMrush offers significant advantages over SimilarWeb. Because SimilarWeb only looks at traffic generated from social media, SEMrush looks closer at things like your competitors’ social media activities, posts and other best practices.
Both run competitor analysis and provide data on SEO, PPC, traffic and traffic sources, but SEMrush dives deeper into site analysis with its auditing tool. It provides users with current SEO problems and possible solutions based on ranking algorithms and best practices.

As far as pricing is concerned, with SEMrush you can choose between four packages. You pay a monthly fee for a clearly defined set of features grouped for you into toolkits by purpose. There are no hidden costs and you cancel anytime.
With SimilarWeb, you pay a monthly or yearly fee for a set of basic features and each additional feature costs extra. Because of this you may not realize the crucial features you’re missing out on or end up paying for things you don’t actually need since you select them yourself.
We recommend SEMrush to our clients and have always been pleased with the services and convenience it offers.
But don’t take our word for it, here are what other reviewers are saying:
- SEMrush meets the needs of their business better than SimilarWeb
